I had to long press the  power button a to force a shut down since my screen choices weren't responding and I couldn't get past the lock screen. I waited 10 seconds after forced shut down , powered it back up, and all seemed ok afterwards . I'm glad I tried that rather than taking the battery out of it, which I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to.
